I’m Joyce Harrell, the Apothecary Nurse™. My passion for learning about herbs started in my early 20’s. I ventured into a small bookstore one day, and found a little book called Herbally Yours. Needless to say, this little book changed my life and the desire to have more knowledge about natural plant remedies started that day!
I went to school and received my nursing license in 1990, after all three of my children had been born. That had been a life long dream since the age of 14. I continued however to learn about herbs and herbal remedies. Dried herbs were a staple in my home. Every time we moved to a new town, the first place I looked for was a natural health store.
When we moved to the area I live now, of course, one of my first searches was looking for a local natural health store. There was a little herb shop in Tarboro, NC, and although that shop is no longer there, (they have moved to Rocky Mount, NC, where I now live, and have grown and expanded since) I am still on my herbal journey! It’s my passion, and I’m now sharing that passion with YOU!
My life recently took an unexpected turn when my oldest son died January 17, 2017 as a result of PTSD and TBI from Iraq, and what we believe to be directly from effects of the psych meds prescribed to him by the VA. He was on 5 meds (all with suicidal ideation side effects), none of which were proven effective for PTSD or TBI. I’d been concerned for many years the focus had been on the meds, and not other therapies which the VA itself states are affective (like EMDR).
This change in my life caused me to look deeply at where I was in life. I was writing about stress reduction, and being well…and only sprinkling in my real passion of herbal remedies and aromatherapy. I was creating income as a side gig from my wellness writing in order to have a full-time income so I could work from home. How crazy was that. Why wasn’t I just focusing on my REAL passion?
Life as I know it will never be the same. I was devastated beyond my own imagination. This life altering experience created in me a need to do much introspection. Life is not promised to anyone. Having time to reflect and regroup, I decided to pour myself into what it is I REALLY want to do with my life to make a difference in myself and others.
I was talking to Brittney Wilson, (aka The Nerdy Nurse) and she asked me a very thought-provoking question. She asked what I really wanted to be known for. I quickly answered her and said I wanted to help people with their wellbeing as a wellness coach (which I am). To be honest…that was a flippant answer and really didn’t reflect me at all. It was the me I was TRYING to be.
After much soul-searching I decided to let go of what I’d been doing and embrace ME. I’m passionate about using herbs, aromatic support, flower essences, hydrosols, and food to nourish our health and wellbeing. Instead of skirting around the topic, (I’d been sprinkling ideas of herbal remedies and oils in my writings on stress reduction and wellness), I decided to dive head on into my REAL passion.
